Midterm Project

Due Week 7 (Oct 21).

Build. A ChucK piece built using what’s been covered in Weeks 1 through 6.

Coding concepts. Must include:

Change over time. At least one element of the piece (pitch, rate, volume, filter cutoff, pan, or similar) must change over the course of the piece rather than stay static throughout.

Inspiration. Something simple and well executed is better than something complex and not well executed. You do not need advanced coding to make a strong piece.

These pieces can work as music, or just as sound experimentation, either is a valid direction. Revisit the artists mentioned in the Course Home page’s ChucK’s Strengths section, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, Ryoji Ikeda, Alva Noto, Frakkur, for a sense of what’s possible at different levels of complexity, from dense sound design to very minimal, process-driven work.

Submission.

  1. Submit your code through GitHub, your class repository, the same process you’ve been using since Week 4.
  2. Render your piece into an audio file and upload it somewhere like SoundCloud, YouTube, or Vimeo.
  3. Fill out the official CalArts student form at creativecomputing.calarts.edu/studentform. In the Sketch URL field, paste your rendered audio link.
  4. Take a screenshot of your successful form submission and upload it to Canvas along with the rest of this assignment.

Presentation. You’ll present your piece in class on October 21, as part of a shared Midterm presentation across the three Fall 2026 Creative Computing courses (Coding Art Fundamentals, Intro to TouchDesigner, and Coding Music Fundamentals). This is an open door event, so other students are welcome to come watch.

Weight

20% of your final grade. See Grading on the Course Home page for the full breakdown.
