Intro to TouchDesigner

This course teaches TouchDesigner, a node-based program for building real-time visuals. Students build a new network every week, starting with a simple color palette and working up to audio-reactive and 3D work. The semester ends with a live group performance.

Credit Load

This is a 3-credit course, following CalArts’ standard credit-hour policy: 45 hours of work per credit for BFA students, 60 hours per credit for Masters students. That comes to 135 total hours for BFA students and 180 for Masters students across the semester. In-class time adds up to about 25.7 hours over the semester. The rest is independent work: roughly 7.8 hours a week for BFA students, and roughly 11 hours a week for Masters students.

Overview

Course Description

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to TouchDesigner, a leading platform for interactive visual design. Students explore audio reactivity and dynamic visuals, introduction to 3D modeling and rendering, essential TouchDesigner components and workflows, and building interactive, real-time visual systems. No prior TouchDesigner experience is necessary.

A typical 1h50m session opens with a few minutes for questions, then moves straight into building that week’s network for the rest of class. There usually isn’t time for a separate lecture or homework preview; that’s part of why every session is recorded.

Learning outcomes

Masters students additionally build toward leading interdisciplinary teams on the required group final, independent research beyond what’s shown in class, and articulating the thinking behind spatial and visual work.

Weekly homework, in one line

Each class gets recorded and the network isn’t shared as a file. Homework is: recreate that day’s network from what you saw (plus the recording if needed), then add one new operator you found and explored yourself. Due 11:59 PM the night of class, then submission closes, no late work.

01Sept 9

Pixels, Assets & an Exploratory Palette

  • Install, and a tour of the interface.
  • Pixels and resolution, what an asset is, and how to find operator docs.
  • Building a palette component: Constant TOPs, Table DAT, Ramp TOP, COMP.
  • A first look at the pre-made “2D Compile” network, previewing where the semester is headed.

Assignment: recreate today’s network, plus a new TOP you found on your own.

02Sept 16

Signal Processing

  • A brief note on color theory, not a full lecture.
  • Wave CHOP as an LFO, exported into a TOP parameter to animate the palette.
  • HSV Adjust and Lookup TOP.

03Sept 23

Feedback Loops

  • Feedback TOP, kept simple: no webcam, no added noise.
  • Building a clear mental model of feedback on its own.

Audio Reactivity + Control Panel

  • Audio Spectrum CHOP driving visuals.
  • Panel COMPs: buttons and sliders for manual control.

Video Synthesis

  • Displace TOP and Ramp TOP, used heavily for waveform-like, video-synthesizer-style visuals.
  • Warping one pattern by another.

2D Compile: Revisit & Explore

  • Revisiting the pre-made “2D Compile” network from Week 1, with the basics re-taught.
  • Dedicated time to explore and ask questions.
  • Midterm dry run.

Assignment: pick one or two techniques from the network and fold them into your midterm piece.

Week 7 · Oct 21 · Midterm

A TouchDesigner piece with a custom color palette, at least one animated or reactive component, and the Week 3 or Week 5 technique and/or audio reactivity. No fixed time slot; scheduling is coordinated across all three classes.

3D Introduction

  • Geometry, Camera, and Light COMPs, and the Render TOP.
  • Your palette applied as material color.

Assignment: recreate today’s network, plus a new operator.

09Nov 4

Instancing

  • Instancing: per-instance position, color, and scale driven from data.
  • Counts kept to what a typical laptop can handle comfortably.

Assignment: recreate today’s network, plus a new operator. This week is also the deadline to have your final group formed (minimum 2, maximum 3).

10Nov 11

POPs: Point Clouds & Particles

  • TouchDesigner’s newer particle and point-cloud family (POPs).
  • Again scaled to run well on personal laptops.

Assignment: recreate today’s network, plus a new operator. Your group’s presentation slot for Dec 2 also goes out this week.

Week 12 · Nov 25 · Remote: CCRMA + 1:1 Help

Shared remote day. A new pre-made “2D+3D Compile” reference network for final-project use, plus 1:1 help for cross-tool OSC/MIDI wiring. Specs for the Week 14 digital submission go out today.

Week 13 · Dec 2 · Final Performance

In-person, required group performance, 1 to 6 PM. Your slot within that window was assigned in Week 10.

Week 14 · Dec 9 · Digital Submission & Portfolio

Recorded performance due, along with the required remote AI workshop, including a TouchDesigner-specific segment (attendance counts toward your final project grade, see Grading), and your Digital Expo portfolio.

Final Project

Final Project

This is a live group performance, in person, on Wednesday, December 2, within the 1–6 PM window. This matches Coding Music Fundamentals and Coding Art Fundamentals exactly. Solo projects are not allowed.

Minimum 2 people, maximum 3.
Forming your group
Around Week 4, once rosters are settled, a chart goes out where each student checks off their own background (musician, visual artist, prior coding experience) plus notes, so students who don’t know each other can find a match. Week 9 is the deadline to have a group formed. Unformed groups get assigned that day, and members exchange contact information.
TouchDesigner requirement
Every TouchDesigner-enrolled student in a group contributes at least one properly built, genuinely real-time network: audio-reactive, OSC/MIDI-driven, or generative, not a pre-rendered video played back with nothing live behind it.
Masters student leadership
Each group should include at least one Masters student, when enrollment allows. Masters students are expected to take a leading role in their group. It’s a chance to practice the leadership and professionalism needed on mixed-experience teams, in school and afterward.
Connecting outward
Every group’s TouchDesigner content needs to connect to at least one other piece of software or language, such as ChucK, p5.js, openFrameworks, or Ableton, or anything that speaks OSC, MIDI, or another live protocol. You aren’t limited to this list; any tool that fits the piece works.
Reusing one project
If a group’s project counts as the final for more than one of Luisa’s three Fall 2026 courses, it has to incorporate each tool it’s counting for: two tools if double-counted, all three if triple-counted.
Digital submission
Week 14 (Dec 9): a high-quality video/audio recording, due the same day, for grading and the Digital Expo portfolio. Specs go out by Week 12. It doesn’t have to be a straight capture of the live show. This matches Coding Music Fundamentals and Coding Art Fundamentals exactly; there are no exceptions for any of the three courses.

Attendance at the Week 14 AI workshop counts for 10% of your final project grade. If you miss it, you lose that part of your grade.

If you miss 3 or more classes without an excused absence, you will receive a No Credit for the course. Sign in every class. Sessions are recorded, so you can catch up on content after a missed class, but that doesn’t count as attendance credit.
